Introduction to Helsinki - Katajanokka
The capital city of Finland, Helsinki was founded in 1550 and boasts a rich cultural history. The neighbourhood of Katajanokka is a great place to use as a base, as it is located close to the central district and boasts an excellent range of amenities such as shops, restaurants and world class Katajanokka hotels. This district is technically a small island, and one of the main landmarks here is the harbour. This is a popular stop for cruise ships that connect the area with a range of other nearby destinations such as Tallinn. Visitors who choose to explore the area on foot are sure to be impressed by Katajanokka's architecture, and one of the most stunning buildings here is Uspenski Cathedral, which was built in the 19th century and features iconic towers topped with pointed roofs. Also of interest is the Foreign Ministry building, which was designed in 1825 by architect Carl Ludvig Engel. Visit our Helsinki Travel Guide
