Introduction to Haukipudas, Finland
Haukipudas is a municipality in the Finnish province of Oulu, along the shores of the Gulf of Bothnia which separates Finland from Sweden. The town, which has roughly 19,000 inhabitants, is close to the southern regions of Lapland, and is sometimes viewed as a cheaper option to stay in than nearby Oulu among those with intentions to head north. The main E8 route which goes along the west coast of the country runs just east of Haukipudas and provides good transport links to the north and south. The River Kiiminkijoki flows through the town, and Haukipudas hotels can be found on both sides of the river as well as around the outskirts of the town. The area offers limited tourist attractions but there is stunning scenery to take in along the river, and sports such as canoeing and fishing are popular. There is also a newly developed golf course in the town for those who want to work on their handicap while visiting Haukipudas.
