Introduction to Hamina, Finland
Hamina is a small Finnish town which lies on the Gulf of Finland, around 40kms west of the border with Russia. It is in the Kymenlaakso region, in the province of Southern Finland. This harbour town of almost 22,000 people is situated 150kms east of Helsinki, the capital city of Finland, and only 250kms west of the popular Russian city of St Petersburg. Hamina sports a bizarre town plan, with its main streets branching out to form concentric circles around the central plaza. The town was previously the location of many Russian-Swedish battles and was built this way to allow the Swedish forces to be able to defend the town. It is still possible to walk around some of the defending walls which, in various parts, have been preserved and restored. There are several Hamina hotels scattered throughout the town, with some found by Savilahti Lake in the town centre. The port is Finland's fifth largest and deals mainly with Russian transit cargo and forestry products, handling roughly five million tonnes each year. other spellings: haminahotels, hamena otel, hamina hotell, haminar hote, hemina hotle, harmina hotes
