Scuba diving: quite simply, Fiji is a scuba diver’s dream. The more than 300 islands feature breathtaking coral reefs such as Beqa Lagoon and Astrolabe off the southern islands and Rainbow Reef in the northern islands, just to name a few. During an average two-week holiday, it would be difficult to even scratch the surface. Fiji’s incredibly warm and clear waters, as well as its unwavering climate, mean diving can be done year round.
Fishing: with its largely untouched waters featuring a variety of marlin, tuna and dolphin fish among other species, Fiji offers excellent game fishing that can be easily organised from Suva and other major centres around the islands. Sharks of more than 100 pounds in weight have also regularly been caught in its waters. Freshwater fishing is also popular, particularly in the rivers and mangrove streams of Viti Levu.
Eating out: with its mix of Indian and native local cuisine along with its penchant for Chinese food and abundant Western, Korean and Japanese fare, Fiji has a varied eating out experience quite unlike anywhere else in the region. Certainly the curries here are fantastic, courtesy of the large Indian contingent. For the best in eating out in Fiji, head to Suva.
Hiking: with nature reserves on the doorstep of the capital and a hefty mountain range that runs through the middle of the island, Viti Levu offers countless opportunities for hiking and camping. Areas like the Colo-i-Suva Forest Reserve feature marked trails to make life easier but some of the most enjoyable hiking here is off the beaten track where remote, traditional villages are usually part of the experience.
