Fiji Travel Guide - Nightlife
Drinking culture in Fijji can be a little daunting to the uninitiated. Kava, a moderate intoxicant which is drunk regularly, particularly by the local men, is made from the root of the pepper plant and leaves the mouth feeling numb for about 10 minutes after consumption. If you’ve never tried it before, start off in small doses to avoid any problems, which very rarely happen.
In bars, visitors will also notice that groups of friends, no matter how large, will often share a large jug of cocktail and one glass – meaning it’s a communal free-for-all. If you like things nice and hygienic, you might want to order your own.
Resorts around the Yasawas feature numerous beach-bar style venues along the sand that serve popular drinks like Fijji Bitter and Fijji Gold, the most popular locally brewed beers, as well as a healthy range of cocktails. The late night places go on until the early hours of the morning with Fridays and Saturdays the busiest nights.
