Ross River Virus, a mosquito-borne disease usually found in north-eastern Australia, has been found here but cases are very rare. Two Canadian tourists were, however, reported to have come down with the virus following visits to Fiji in 2003 and 2004.
Travellers need not receive any special immunisations for travel to Fiji. As usual, tetanus jabs should be up to date and tourists are also advised to make sure they are immunised against Hepatitis A and, to a lesser degree, Hepatitis B.
Mumps and measles have both been seen in Fiji in recent years but should not present problems to Western travellers who should already be immunised against both. Although the region has a reputation for mangy animals, particularly Papua New Guinea and East Timor, rabies is not a problem in Fiji.
