Church of St Francis Xavier: overlooking King’s road on the north-western side of Viti Levu, this dilapidated-looking building doesn’t look like much from outside but inside, its walls are decorated by a set of striking frescoes that depict Fijian life that were created in the 1960s by a resident Frenchman, Jean Chalot.
The church mixes the best of European style with Fijian influences, with its typically colonial exterior and interior floor spread with weaved mats.
Suva Point: located within Apted Park in the Fijian capital, Suva Point is one of the best places to watch the sun come up, with its superb views looking east out over the South Pacific. Given Fiji’s location right on the International Date Line, Suva Point represents one of the earliest sunrises anywhere on the globe.
Colo-i-Suva Forest Reserve: less than 30 minutes by car from Suva, this lush national park is home to a number of waterfalls along with diverse animal and plant life. Some trails here are marked, making short hikes easy within the reserve’s boundaries, which fall close to Naitasiri and Namosi – areas which are considered highly representative of the old Fiji where village life is still very traditional.
