Introduction to Lomaiviti Islands, Fiji
The Lomaiviti Islands archipelago is a group of islands which lies between the main Fijian island of Vetu Levu and the Lau Islands. Laidback and tranquil, rustic and idyllic, this group of islands consists of nine primary islands and numerous smaller isles. The archipelago is famous for its fantastic diving, rich history and picturesque indigenous villages. The main island is Ovalau, which has a small landing strip for those who don't want to arrive by boat. In addition to the beach and the water sports here, visitors can visit the town of Levuka, Fiji's former colonial capital. The other main islands include Gau, Wayaka, Koro, Makogai and Moturiki. The peaceful surroundings and excellent dry, sunny weather give the islands plenty of appeal, and an added bonus for many is that they are not as touristy as many of the other Fijian islands, ensuring a wonderful retreat away from the crowds. Accommodation varies from island to island but in general, Lomaiviti Islands hotels consist of everything from exclusive resorts to backpacker hostels.
