Introduction to Labasa, Fiji
Labasa is the main town on the Fijian island of Vanua Levu, the country's second-largest island. It is situated in the northeastern part of the island in Macuata Province and has a population in the region of 28,000 inhabitants. Fiji is mainly known for its tropical islands but this town, made up predominantly of Indo-Fijians, provides insight into the daily life of locals in Fiji. Farming is the town's main industry, with sugar cane being the largest crop grown here. Labasa is home to the Fiji Sugar Corporation sugar mill, the only mill of its kind on the island. The town is pretty much off the tourist trail as the majority of visitors head straight for the islands and their beaches; however, there are a couple of Labasa hotels to choose from for those who do visit. The town offers facilities which are not available on many of the tourist islands, such as a cinema and a hospital. The town's large market lets visitors sample the real day-to-day life of Fijians and a range of local foods. other spellings: labaashotels, otel labsaa, laabsa hotell, lbaasa hotes, albasa hotle, labas
