The combination of the rustic surrounding countryside and the cheerful, urban feel of the city as well as the cultural and historical attractions, should keep you busy for a few days at least.
Foynes Flying Boat Museum: is a must-see for anyone with an interest in aviation history and is housed at the original Shannon airport terminal. Pan Am’s first luxury aircraft, the Yankee Clipper, landed here with its first passengers to Europe in 1939.
Glin Castle: has been home to the knights of Glin for over 700 years. The sparkling white castle is picturesquely set amid 395 acre of rambling gardens, farmland and forests. The current resident knight is a keen historian and preservationist, having amassed an impressive collection of 18th century Irish furniture and memorabilia.
Georgian House and Garden: you can experience the splendour of Limerick’s past by making a visit to the Georgian House. The entire home has been restored to its former glory and makes fascinating viewing.
King John’s Castle: was once a royal fortress situated in a dominant position on the banks of the Shannon. The castle dates from 1210, when King John (of England) ordered a fortress to be built here, with the resulting castle being one of the finest examples of medieval architecture to be found in Ireland.
St Mary’s Cathedral: the present cathedral is situated on the site of an early palace of one of the kings of Munster which dated back to 1172. This current building is much newer but boasts a pre-Reformation stone altar and a 12th century Romanesque doorway.
