Muckross House and Garden: built in 1843, this sprawling Victorian mansion was donated to the state around a century later. The mansion now houses a folk museum that features exhibits on the lifestyles of the landed gentry and their servants in the 19th century. Items on display include local furniture and Irish prints, art and needlework, mixed with a variety of Chippendale chairs, Oriental screens and Turkish carpets. The gardens are filled with azaleas and rhododendrons blooming in season and there is also an on-site restaurant. Torc Waterfall: from the edge of the Middle Lake, this waterfall can be reached by a short walk up a steep footpath from where you’ll be able to enjoy excellent views over the Killarney lakes. This 60 foot waterfall is formed by a river that flows down from the ‘Punch Bowl,’ higher up in the mountains. Ross Castle: is picturesquely situated at the edge of Lough Leane. Originally a 15th century stronghold of an O'Donoghue chieftain, the castle was never able to be conquered by land. In the 17th century, however, Cromwell’s troops launched a successful attack from the lake. The Colleen Bawn Rock: about 30 minutes by car from Muckross House you’ll come to a lovely beach looking out over Muckross Lake. A small, rocky island lies offshore, a stone’s throw from the beach, called the ‘Colleen Bawn Rock.’ This is not only a beautiful spot to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, but is also steeped in Irish history and folklore. |
