Kilkenny Travel Guide - Activities
Visit Dunmore Cave: located in Ballyfoyle, this limestone cave was the site of a Viking massacre in 928 and is well worth a visit. There are a number of different chambers and some of the best calcite formations in Ireland. There are various legends associated with the cave and the tourist centre on the site is a useful source of information.
Watch a Hurling Match: Kilkenny is the place visit to learn about the Irish sport of hurling, as Kilkenny have recently been the dominant team. It is certainly an experience as the game is little played outside of Ireland. Players use a wooden stick (hurley) and score points for hitting a small ball into a goal for 3 points or above the goal and between the posts for 1 point.
Drink in Kyteler’s Inn: Kyteler’s Inn on Kieran's Street is the oldest pub in Kilkenny and has a rich and interesting history dating back to 1324 when Alice Kyteler, a brothel keeper and black witch, opened the business here. Today there is a great atmosphere and a good menu, making it a good place to spend a few hours.
Golf: Ireland is a popular destination for golfers and Kilkenny is no exception. There are a number of excellent golf courses, such as Mount Juliet Golf Club, a course designed by Jack Nicklaus that has hosted the Irish Open. The beautiful country side and lush greenery make it ideal for a golfing break.
