Ireland is the third largest island in Europe and one which is split into two separately governed countries; the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. References made to the former are often just shortened to ‘Ireland’ and the majority of people in the know will appreciate that the use of this term invariably refers to the Republic as opposed to Northern Ireland.
