Introduction to Tipperary County, Ireland
Perhaps best known for the WWI-era marching song written by Jack Judge and Harry Williams, It's a Long Way to Tipperary, Tipperary town rests in south Tipperary. This area of mid-west Ireland is recognised for the River Shannon, which runs through it. Milk processing and butter making are big industries here, and visitors will see this reflected in the rich homemade meals of local pubs. Tipperary Racecourse is the town's number one entertainment spot with its horse racing, but there is a range of alternative attractions close by. The former seat of the Kings of Muster, the Rock of Cashel, is worth a visit for its impressive 12th and 13th century ruins. Close by is the Tipperary Country Club, the perfect spot for a leisurely round on the Philip Walton-designed 18-hole golf course. The castle at Cahir is equally worthy of a visit along with the town's Swiss cottage. Access to Tipperary town by air is via nearby Limerick or Shannon and there are a number of hotels in Tipperary to accommodate visitors.
