Introduction to Sligo County, Ireland
County Sligo in the northwest corner of Ireland will not be very high on many visitors list of places to see but they are missing a treat. The town of Sligo has seen a lot of development since the early 1990s but it is still a lovely town that is in the heart of some wonderful scenery. The riverside hotels in Sligo tend to be the busiest as they are close to the shops and local entertainment. There is plenty to see and do from the hotels in Sligo and visitors should not miss the impressive Sligo Abbey or the Famine Memorial that commemorates the loss of lives during the Irish Potato Famine of 1845-1849. The town is surrounded by beautiful mountains. Leaving the comfort of the hotels in Sligo you can explore the fantastic flat topped Ben Bulben and the lesser known Knocknarea Mountain with a burial mound at its summit.
