Introduction to Roscommon County, Ireland
Sharing its name with the county in which it sits, Roscommon is an interesting stop off for history buffs due to the presence of a castle and an abbey here. The 13th century Roscommon Castle, the main sight in town, overlooks the centre from a hill. Although in ruins, parts of its three-storey high towers remain. The abbey, formerly the home of Dominican friars, also sits in ruins after neglect during the Reformation and dates from the same period as the castle. The abbey houses the grave of King Felim O'Connor of Connacht. Those visitors looking for a break from historical sights may like to practise their swing at the 18-hole golf club or place a bet on the horses at the local horse racing track. Hotels in Roscommon are mostly situated on or close to the main street where the 17th century Bank of Ireland building stands. This architecturally significant edifice was remodelled by Sir William Morrison in the mid-18th century and has served many purposes during its existence. other spellings: roscommonhotels, roscomon otel, ruscommon hotell, roscomon hote
