Introduction to Monaghan County, Ireland
Monaghan is the district seat of the county from which it derives its name, in the Irish Republic. The city centre has been built around four inter-linked squares, all of which are lined with interesting historic buildings. The main draws in the centre include the Rossmore Memorial and the regional museum, as well as the array of charming pubs and restaurants that serve the area's traditional fare. Visitors can peruse the number of town shops, which sell specialty items such as Carrickmacross lace. Monaghan hotels provide a good base for enjoying the Feile Oriel Fiddler contests in May and the prestigious Harvest Time Blues Festival in September. The countryside around Monaghan is unspoilt and offers outdoor activities that include walking, pony trekking, cycling, golf, fishing, canoeing, waterskiing and wake boarding. Loughs such as Muckno at nearby Castleblayney are well-stocked with game fish species, while trails through the beautiful countryside pass through forests and rolling hills, leading to picturesque villages where local bars and cafes offer a pleasant resting place.
