Introduction to Meath County, Ireland
Meath is one of the 26 historic counties in the Irish Republic and lies to the northwest of Dublin. The county has a number of must-see historic sites, amongst which includes the Hill of Tara, Loughcrew, the Bru na Boinne prehistoric megalithic complex and the ruins of the Norman era Trim Castle. The two most important towns in this county are Trim and Navan. These communities offer visitors a good choice of Meath hotels, which are not only convenient bases for enjoying the greater surrounds, but are also located close to nightlife venues and restaurants. Other accommodation options here are bed-and-breakfasts, self catering cottages and budget hostels. Meath offers a variety of outdoor pursuits, such as game angling on the River Boyne and the lakes near Collinstown. There is also golfing, horseback riding, walking trails and cycling to be enjoyed. Horse racing tracks at Fairyhouse and Bellewstown host regular events while, during summer, the Irish Sea resorts of Bettystown and Laytown offer soft sands and cool waters for swimming.
