Introduction to Laois County, Ireland
Laois is a landlocked East Coast and Midlands county in the Republic of Ireland that is famed for its historical buildings, heritage towns and picturesque walking trail. Portlaoise is the county town and the perfect place to stay as it features a number of excellent Laois hotels and restaurants. Laois Heritage Trail begins at the town and goes to many of the main sights in the county. The Rock of Dunamase is situated some six kilometres along the trail from the town and is the ruins of a castle that was built in the 12th century. Donaghmore Famine Workhouse Museum, which explores the grim conditions at this and other workhouses around the period of the Great Famine, is also worth visiting. There are guided tours at the museum as well as exhibitions providing the history of the famine and the workhouse. Durrow is a lovely little village that has many excellent restaurants and historical buildings, including Durrow Castle. The Slieve Bloom Mountains have many walking trails amid stunning scenery, and there are many historical buildings, heritage villages and gardens to visit.other spellings: laioshotels, otelin liaos, raios hotell, riaos hote, laioes hotes, liaoes hotle, raioes
