Introduction to Kilkenny County, Ireland
When it comes to Irish medieval sites, Kilkenny boasts a vast majority of them. Located in the southeastern region of the Republic of Ireland, this spectacular city is often referred to as the Marble City on account of its abundance of medieval structures. Kilkenny hotels are usually packed with visitors throughout the year, so it is imperative that travellers book accommodation well in advance. While strolling through the city, there are literally dozens of wonderful sites to discover. The main attraction is Norman-era Kilkenny Castle, which boasts splendidly landscaped gardens. The castle stands over the beautiful River Nore, another attraction within the city. St Canice's Cathedral, the nation's second largest medieval church, offers wondrous views of the landscape. Finally, Black Abbey is a medieval church that was built in the middle of the 11th century. When visitors have exhausted the medieval attractions, the shopping and nightlife here are first rate.
