Introduction to Dublin City - Temple Bar
The Dublin district of Temple Bar lies along the southern banks of the River Liffey as it meanders through the city centre. It is known as Dublin’s cultural quarter for its cobbled medieval streets and pretty buildings. It’s also the nightlife centre of town, with many music bars, pubs, clubs and other lively entertainment venues buzzing year-round. The district has a long and impressive history, with the first-ever performance of Handel’s Messiah having taken place here in 1742. Nowadays, Temple Bar is home to a large number of Irish cultural institutions promoting the arts, films, music, photography and multimedia. Also found here are the Irish Stock Exchange, the country’s central bank, several galleries and a theatre school. Renovated, historic Meetinghouse Square and Temple Bar Square form part of the district’s flourishing nightlife, with Temple Bar hotels and pubs giving a traditional Irish welcome to visitors to this fashionable, fun place.
