Introduction to Dublin City - Clontarf
Nowadays, Clontarf may be a suburb of Dublin, Ireland, but this historic community has a fascinating history in its own right. One of the best known Clontarf hotels is located inside a partially restored castle, while many more local accommodations are found inside historic Clontarf homes. Visitors can see the site of the 1014 Battle of Clontarf, when Ireland's High King defeated Viking invaders on Good Friday. A well dedicated to the High King still stands on Castle Avenue. Another far more recent resident, Bram Stoker, has a park named after him near his ancestral home. Dublin's second biggest park, St Anne's Park, and its fragrant rose gardens stretch across the district and the adjoining suburb of Raheny. An old wooden bridge links the suburb to the equally spectacular Bull Island Bird Sanctuary and Nature Reserve. Several types of wading birds and an interpretive centre can be seen on this UNESCO biosphere reserve situated next to two golf courses.Visit our Dublin City Travel Guide
