Introduction to Aran Islands, Ireland
Ireland's Aran Island is actually an archipelago of three separate islands off the nation's west coast. Inis Mor, the biggest and most visited island of the three, is no larger than 12kms in length. Inis Oirr may be the southernmost and smallest of the three islands, but Inis Meain, the island in the middle, receives the fewest tourists. Most Aran Island hotels and other amenities are located on Inis Mor, but Inis Oirr contains a good selection of quiet accommodation. Irish remains the most frequently used language on the Aran Islands due to their isolated location, but most island residents also speak and understand English. Although no car ferries currently travel to the islands, passenger-only ferries are available all year long. Walking, cycling, and taking taxis or bus tours operated by locals are the best ways to explore the islands. The most impressive of the many Iron Age landmarks on the islands is Dun Aengus, perched atop a 100m cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Teampull Bheanain, the world's tiniest church, has stood here for over 1,000 years.
