Featuring a magnificent historical district, a plethora of parks and gardens, several museums, and the oldest university in Estonia, Tartu is considered to be the cultural capital of the country. Located in the southeast region of Estonia, along the Emajogi River, Tartu portrays an interesting blend of modern architecture with pockets of German, Swedish and Russian influences. Most Tartu hotels are situated between the rail line and Emajogi River, in the central districts of town. Some of the buildings can be expensive, but there are ranges of cheaper accommodation options in the downtown area. Architecturally, the city has a variety of must-visit sites, including the historic Town Hall, Cathedral Ruins and St John's Cathedral. Tours of the mid-town area and the city's famous sites can be easily organised at the larger lodgings. After WWII, numerous parks were established throughout the city, which include the Botanical Gardens and Barclay Square.
