The boom times of the late 19th and early 20th centuries eventually declined, and after the world wars, the 1960s and 70s were particularly grim. Manchester was on the verge of a significant recovery when it was targeted by the IRA with a massive bomb in 1996, destroying a large part of the centre.
Resiliency was the order of the day once again, and the city poured huge sums into rebuilding the centre, leading to a rebirth of the city as a whole. Significant redevelopment projects followed as Manchester grew in strength, hosting the Commonwealth Games not many years later, in 2002.
A vibrant music scene is supported here that has spawned well-known bands such as Oasis, the Smiths and the Stone Roses; and also a large number of artists, comedians and poets. Britain’s longest-running TV series, Coronation Street is set here, and enjoys success and a fan base around the world. As you likely know, Manchester is renowned for its football talent, with ‘Man U’ being one of the most successful, and richest, clubs in the world.
Manchester’s fusion of international cultures, diverse styles, new trends and cutting-edge ideas mixes with one the largest student populations found in Europe and one of the most active gay communities as well to create its unique urban flavour. This exuberant city is regarded by many as not only England’s ‘second city’ but also as the ‘capital of the north.’
