You’ll find that bus service a bit slow, as traffic is usually heavy, particularly during the rush hours. Train service is considerably faster, but the stations can sometimes be a distance from your destination. Trams are typically the speediest option, but also cover limited areas of the city.
Metro: although Manchester doesn't have a traditional Metro service it does provide a Metrolink light rail service in the form of trams. Tram service connects Altrincham, to the south, with the centre and Piccadilly Station making stops at Stretford and Old Trafford on the way.
Train: the greater Manchester rail network comprises 98 stations and covers 142 miles of route, ensuring connections even with the more remote, smaller destinations. Services are provided by a number of private operators, from both Piccadilly and Victoria stations.
Bus: bus services are available throughout the greater Manchester area, operated by a number of private companies. Typically, service begins early morning, and in many areas, runs quite late on the night bus service, particularly in areas where there are student residences.
Taxi: both traditional black cabs and private cars for hire operate in the city. Only black cabs, however, can be hailed on the street or at curb side. During the daytime, it is quite easy to find a cab, but be advised that at night and during the weekends there are often long queues.
