January/February Festivals
Chinese New Year: the date changes annually, coinciding with the cycles of the moon, and typically will fall in late January or early February.
Manchester’s China Town, located around Faulkner Street, is transformed into a colourful and noisy carnival culminating in an impressive fireworks display. This is a great time to visit the neighbourhood and try out some of the traditional foods that are featured during this time.
Kinofilm has developed over the last decade from a ‘one-off’ local event, to one of a regional nature, to one of national - and now international reach: it’s highly regarded and firmly entrenched on the international circuit.
March Festivals
Manchester Irish Festival: in March, for two weeks around St Patrick’s Day, which occurs mid-month, the city celebrates everything Gaelic/Celtic in a full programme of events and activities.
The city has played a pivotal role in the world of music and the festival premieres works by both established and new international musical artists. From a cultural perspective, the festival’s programme includes debates, films and exhibits on important current issues and developments.
July Festivals
The Lord Mayor's Parade: at the end of July, the Lord Mayor’s Parade brings out street entertainers who perform amid general festivities, and the parade itself, which features carnival floats. Venues include the Town Hall and the various other points around the centre.
DPercussion: is a programme of musical events, held at both indoor and outdoor venues in August. DJs and live musicians provide the entertainment and there’s dancing in many of the streets in the city centre.
October Festivals
Manchester Food and Drink Festival: annually, in October, a wide array of food- and drink-related events are held at venues throughout the city. In addition to being able to try out the various offerings, you’ll find loads of displays and workshops on offer as well.
