The Lowry Centre: is located in the recently re-developed Salford Quays area, just outside the centre. It has become one of the top arts and entertainment venues in Manchester, showcasing both the performing arts and visual arts. The building itself is considered a significant architectural statement in the city’s re-vitalisation, boasting a unique identity that reflects its dynamic attitude toward the arts and culture.
The centre features two theatres, which are typically venues for the finest performances offered in the city - from musical comedy to ballet. In addition, three popular galleries display some of the best works of LS Lowry and those of many important contemporary artists.
City Centre Cruise: boat tours are available along the River Irwell and the Manchester Ship Canal, ending up at Salford Quays. Some of the most interesting sights in the historic area that has undergone significant development can be seen during the tours. The Irwell and Mersey Packetboat Company operate 50-minute tours and provide commentary about the sights and attractions that you’ll see while you’re on board.
Old Trafford Football Ground Tour: it really doesn’t matter whether you support the 'Mighty Reds' or not, you’ll want to visit world-famous Old Trafford. This football ground is so integral to the city’s identity that nearly everyone who comes to visit spends some time here. If you take the tour, you’ll see the Manchester United Museum and also the stadium.
City Park: Manchester boasts an enviable number of greenbelt areas, suitable for outdoor activities and also for a bit of relaxation. Platt Fields Park, not far from the centre, covers around 100 acres, and is often a venue for concerts, festivals and many other outdoor events.
A bit farther out, and easily reached by public transport, you'll find lovely places such as Dunham, Lyme and Tatton parks owned by the National Trust in the Greater Manchester and Cheshire region. In addition, you can find less-visited nature spots, such as Chorlton Nature Reserve and Quarry Bank Mill in Styal, which are ideal for birdwatchers and walkers.
