Introduction to York, England
No Gothic cathedral in Europe is as large as the minster which has dominated the landscape of the ancient city of York since the 7th century. The cathedral's stained-glass collection is impressive and its lantern tower boasts a stunning view of many other historic buildings in this former Roman city. Even many York hotels are housed in historic structures, but Clifford's Tower and a museum are among the few remains of the city's once majestic castle. The Jorvik Viking Centre takes its names after the city's former name during its Viking occupation period, which started in 866 AD. The basement Eboracum Legion Bathhouse is where visitors can learn more about ancient Roman hygiene and military life at one of the city's oldest attractions. The Merchant Adventurers' Hall is considered the finest medieval Guildhall in Europe. The National Railway Museum is bigger than any other rail museum on Earth and a nearby maze made from maize is said to be the world's largest. The city is said to contain one pub for each day of the year. Ghost walks and archaeological expeditions are unique ways to explore this ancient city.Visit our York Travel Guide
