Introduction to York - City Centre
The historic North Yorkshire city of York is one of the major heritage cities in the UK, drawing huge numbers of visitors annually to its many sights and rich heritage. Its main draw is the breathtaking York Minster, founded 800 years after the Romans took the town in the year 71 AD. This massive Gothic cathedral is the largest in Northern Europe and dominates the cityscape. The last great Viking invasion of Britain took place here, documented in the Jorvik Viking Centre, another must-see for visitors staying in York City Centre hotels. The York Castle Museum displays reconstructions of Victorian and Edwardian streets, traditional costumes and much moire, and the National Railway Museum holds an unrivalled collection of vintage engines and rolling stock. Europe’s finest medieval guildhall is the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, built in the 14th century. Clifford’s Tower was built on the orders of William the Conqueror in the late 11th century and rebuilt by King Henry III in the 13th century. A stroll round the still-standing city walls and gates, built on Roman foundations, is a great end to a day, followed by a ghost walk though the medieval Snickleways in the city centre.Visit our York Travel Guide
