Introduction to Worcester - City Centre
Nearly 100,000 people now live in the West Midlands city of Worcester, located 48kms southwest of Birmingham. Most of the city is situated on the River Severn's eastern banks, and so are most Worcester City Centre hotels. The famous sauce which is still produced at the Lea and Perrins factory may be the city's biggest claim to fame, but its history dates as far back as 400BC. Construction on the imposing Cathedral, still the city's best known landmark, began in 1084, but its crypt dates back even earlier. The Pitchcroft open area north of the city centre is a public space when horse races do not occur. One of the city's three major parks, Royal Park, was an English Civil War battle site, while Gheluvelt Park is a memorial to the soldiers who lost their lives during the WWI Battle of Gheluvelt. Perry Wood, one of the city's two major woodlands, is said to be where Oliver Cromwell made his famous pact with the devil. Every three years, the city has its turn at hosting Europe's oldest music event, the Three Choirs Festival.other spellings: worcesterhotels center, worcester city otel, worcester city centre hotell , worcester
