Introduction to Windsor, England
No castle on Earth is bigger in size or has been lived in for a longer period of time than Windsor Castle, which has been home to Great Britain's royal family since the castle's initial 1075 construction. Many Windsor hotels are situated directly across from the castle, but the most affordable accommodation can be found slightly further away. A flying flag indicates when the Queen is in the castle, but visitors are always welcome to see the castle's extensive art collection, St George's Chapel and the daily Changing of the Guard regardless. The parish church has stood next to the Guildhall and 80 metres from the castle's Henry VIII gate since 1822. The castle and its surrounding gardens can easily be seen from the top seat of the 60m Royal Windsor Wheel in the middle of Alexandra Gardens. Both the main shopping area on Peascod Street and the bridge across the River Thames to neighbouring Eton are closed to motorised vehicles. Memorials to the Magna Carta, the WWII Allied air forces and the former American president John F Kennedy are nearby.Visit our Windsor Travel Guide
