Introduction to Winchester - City Centre
The heritage city of Winchester, England, has been constantly settled since it was called Venta Belgarum during the Roman Empire. This city contains several historic landmarks, but none of them are as famous as its breathtaking Gothic cathedral, one of Europe's biggest, which has welcomed worshippers for more than 900 years. King Arthur's equally famous Round Table and its Great Hall are among the few remaining parts of the castle sharing the city's name. The ruins of another castle, Wolvesey, date from 1110 and stand on a former Saxon structure. Visitors may still read the graffiti by debtors imprisoned at the fortified medieval Westgate prison centuries ago, and still receive the same 'wayfarer's dole' of bread and drink which has been handed to passers-by at the Hospital of St Cross, including pilgrims headed to Canterbury, for at least 700 years. More interactive and modern exhibits can be found at the City Museum, the historic City Mill, the local Discovery Centre, and the five military museums. Although this is one of England's most expensive cities to live in, prices at many Winchester City Centre hotels are often reasonable. other spellings: winchester otel center, wincheste central hotell, winchest hote city, winhester hotles
