Introduction to Whitby, England
The coastal town of Whitby in North Yorkshire is one of the most visited seaside towns on the east coast of northern England. It draws crowds of visitors to the mouth of the River Esk and its stunning harbour. Many people head here for the town's famous fish and chip supper, which is arguably the best in the country. Fresh fish is available from the fish market, which offers the catch of the day on the quayside and some good photo opportunities. Tourists often also head to this area for the famed fossils and skeletons of prehistoric animals which can be found perfectly preserved along the seafront. The town is particularly popular with Scandinavian tourists, who often travel directly across the North Sea, straight into the port. Whitby hotels are often busiest during the summer when the Whitby Regatta Boat Race takes place off the coast, offering yet another reason to stay in the town.
