The second-largest city on the Indonesian island of Sumba, Waikabubak offers basic infrastructure for visitors. The island itself is sparsely populated, tends to be very hot and sees few tourists. There are few resorts or hotels on the island, making it a challenging place for most tourists. There are limited flights available to the island and the vast majority land in Waingapu, thereby entailing a demanding overland trip to hotels in Waikabubak. Alternatively, there are a few flights operated each week from Tambulaka Airport, which is roughly 40kms to the north of town. Visitors can also arrive on the island on ferries and again, most of these also go to Waingapu. Pasolas and megalithic structures are two of the big attractions. During the pasolas held near Waikabubak every year in February and March, competitors on horseback use blunt spears in a bid to unseat opponents. The island's megalithic tombstones date from the Bronze Age and can be spotted all over Sumba.
