Introduction to Torpoint, England
The Cornish village of Torpoint lies opposite Plymouth on the River Tamar's tidal estuary, and is linked to the city by a chain ferry. An 18th century 'planned town', its grid system was commissioned by the Carew family in 1774 and has changed little since then. The family are still in residence at Antony House. The Royal Navy's training ship. HMS Raleigh, is berthed here at Devonport Dockyard. The entire area is rich in British maritime history, with the ancient port of Plymouth at its heart. In 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers left England from here for the New World, permanently changing the Old World by their wish to be free. The charming village is a much-loved tourist destination, and has a good choice of Torpoint hotels for those who prefer to stay near, but not in, the city of Plymouth. Cornwall is unique among the English counties, with its own language, traditions and culture as well as some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. other spellings: torpointhotels, torpiont hote, tropoint hotell, topoint otel, torpoinr hotles
