Introduction to Tonbridge, England
Tonbridge, set in the southeast county of Kent, is an ancient market town mentioned in the Domesday Book and located on higher ground near the River Medway. Nowadays, it's popular as a dormitory town for London commuters, and also draws its share of visitors as a base for touring the rolling Kent countryside as well as its easy access to London. The historic centre holds heritage buildings from as early as the 15th century, well maintained and still in use. It's a good centre for lovers of antiques, and is famous in collector circles for its finely inlaid Tunbridgeware boxes and cabinets. In the 19th century, Tonbridge hotels were full of Londoners 'taking the waters' at nearby Tunbridge Wells, providing a ready market for the ornate wooden craft pieces. Accommodation in the pretty and peaceful town still serve travellers from across the world as it's central for both London, the glorious Kent coast and magnificent Canterbury with its spectacular medieval cathedral.
