Introduction to Thurrock, England
The River Thames runs close to the Essex town of Thurrock. Nowadays, the town is a commuter town for London but visitors can follow the commuters' lead and use the town as a base for travelling to the capital. Hotels in Thurrock are significantly lower in cost than those in the city, so taking the underground rail link from Upminster is an economic option. The town is conveniently located near the M25 and the Dartford Bridge, meaning trips out to the counties south of London and even to Gatwick Airport are possible. Locally there is the Coalhouse Fort, but the town displays little of its rich past in comparison to many other English towns. One less than attractive point in Thurrock history was when the pirate Captain Kidd was 'gibbeted' here in 1701. The main reason for a visit for many is Lakeside Shopping Centre, one of the UK’s largest, with its two multiplex cinemas.
