Introduction to Thirsk, England
The tiny North Yorkshire town of Thirsk nestles between the wild North Yorkshire moors and the Yorkshire Dales with their quaint, scattered stone-built villages. Originally a Viking settlement, as was nearby York, One of Thirsk's claims to fame is its well-known racecourse which stages well-attended flat races in season. This is horse country, and attracts walkers, hikers, cavers and riders as well as those fascinated by the vast acres of remote moorland and the endless skies. Thirsk hotels are mostly small and often historic, with a famous coaching inn on the cobbled medieval square the perfect example. Pubs, guesthouses and bed and breakfast places give a good choice, and Yorkshire hospitality is famous. The little town featured in the much-loved TV series about veterinarian James Herriot, with the cottage used for the surgery now a tiny museum. The ancient city of York is nearby, with its winding streets, towering Minster and Viking heritage centre, and the traditional coastal fishing town of Whitby, linked with Dracula, is a comfortable drive away. other spellings: thirkshotels, otelin thisrk, thrisk hotell, tihrsk hote, htirsk hotes, thirs hotle, thirk
