Introduction to Thetford, England
Steeped in the history of pre-Roman Celtic Britain, the Norfolk market town of Thetford, originally an Iron Age settlement, was the royal town of the Iceni Queen Boudicca, whose tribe were the last in Britain to resist the Roman invasion. Treasures containing gold jewellery have been excavated here, and are now displayed in the British Museum. The town marked an important ford on the Little Ouse River, and is surrounded by vast swathes of agricultural land, much given over to pig-rearing. Tourism is being boosted in the town, set as it is in the centre of the county, with easy access to Norfolk's lonely beaches and picturesque towns and villages. Thetford hotels, as in most English market towns, are a mix of historic coaching inns, local pubs, guesthouses and bed and breakfasts. The town is just off the fast A11 road, giving access to Norwich and to Walsingham, an ancient pilgrimage destination for its shrine to Our Lady, the Virgin Mary, and visited by many English kings and queens.
