Introduction to Tewkesbury - City Centre
The Avon and Severn rivers meet at the ancient town of Tewkesbury, less than 18kms north of Gloucester. These rivers have prevented the town from expanding much since the Middle Ages, so its old centre remains one of England's best preserved. Many of its Tudor buildings are half timbered structures, whose white walls have dark trim and whose doorways are intricately carved. A few Tewkesbury City Centre hotels also fit this description, as does the Black Bear, Gloucestershire's oldest public house, open since 1308. However, few buildings here are as impressive as the 12th century Tewkesbury Abbey, which features England's highest Norman tower. The town is along the path of the Severn Way, the United Kingdom's longest riverside walk, but walking tours along the surviving alleyways are also popular. In addition to the town's history museum, another museum dedicated to the work of nature conservationist John Moore is also located here.
