Introduction to Tenbury Wells, England
Tenbury Wells is a tiny market town set in the River Teme valley deep in the Malvern Hills north of Bristol. The little town, home to a population of just over 3,000, is known to have been settled since the Iron Age, and was briefly fashionable in the late 19th century through the discovery of a mineral water spring, which resulted in an extraordinary 'Chinese-Gothic' pump room and spa designed by James Cranston. As with many villages on fords across rivers, there was a Norman castle here, set on the still extant Castle Tump, a small hill. Known as the 'Town in the Orchard', it is a peaceful place for a long weekend in beautiful scenery amid unspoilt farming countryside. Hops and cider apples are grown here, and the resulting delicious but strong local cider is served in Tenbury Wells hotels and 17th century half-timbered pubs. Queen Victoria visited the spa on several occasions, and is credited with the phrase 'little town in the orchard', hence its nickname. As well as hotels, the village is home to several farm workers' cottages and farmhouses converted into guesthouses.
