On the road from Shrewsbury to Birmingham lies the new city of Telford, a city with a modern layout with historic treasures in its outskirts. The most famous of sites is the Iron Bridge crossing the River Severn to the south in Shropshire. The cast iron arch bridge that unites each side of the Ironbridge Gorge was the first of its kind, opening the area to the transportation of heavy materials such as coal, limestone, clay and iron ore. The bridge is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust featuring 10 museums and sites, including the bridge's original toll house. Shropshire is also home to the Blists Hill Victorian Town and the Northgate Museum, both filled with information on the region's history. Further along the River Severn is Buildwas Abbey, founded in 1135, which is just one of several abbeys in Telford outskirts. The region's tribute to the Industrial Revolution continues in nearby Coalbrookdale with the Museum of Iron and Furnace. Northwest of Telford is Sunnycroft, a beautiful home that is protected by the National Trust. Hotels in Telford provide a great starting point from which to explore these national landmarks.
