Introduction to Teignmouth, England
As its name suggests, the town of Teignmouth lies along the estuary of the River Teign, in the picturesque county of Devon. Once a fishing port with its boats braving the freezing waters of Newfoundland chasing the cod, it became a fashionable seaside resort during the Georgian era. Its port is still active and the pretty town still attracts hordes of summer visitors. The town has a fascinating history involving raids by the French, attack from pirates based on the Flemish coast and a final attack in 1690 by French warships. Subsequently, it became a centre for smugglers bringing in goods from France. Due to its popularity as a tourist town and its proximity to the lonely expanse of Dartmoor, Teignmouth hotels cater for all tastes and prices. Attractive Georgian terraces and other old buildings add to the charm of the town, as does its unusual octagonal church, one of the few in the West Country. other spellings: teignmouthhotels, teigmmouth otel, teignmouht hotell, teignmotuh hote, teignmuoth
