Introduction to Tadley, England
The Hampshire village of Tadley was notorious during the late 1950s and '60s for its proximity to the Aldermaston Atomic Weapons Research Establishment and saw its fair share of demonstrators during the annual Aldermaston March from London as well as during the rest of year due to the anti-nuclear war peace camp. Attesting to the village's 1,000 years or so of settlement is a number of heritage buildings and ancient cottages which add to its quiet charm as a visitor destination. Traditionally, Tadley was known for its cottage industry making the besom brooms, reputed to be the type used by witches for their moonlit rides. The brooms are still made here, although visitors now arrive more conventionally via the A340 from Basingstoke or the train from London. Tadley hotels tend to be small and charming, like the town itself, offering pleasant stays in the English countryside within easy reach of London.
