Introduction to Swaffham, England
The small market town of Swaffham is located inland in the county of Norfolk, and is perhaps best known in the 21st century for its two huge wind turbines attached to an EcoTech Centre, which generate more than three megawatts of electricity per year. The complex has now been linked to eight more turbines nearby. The town is an ancient centre of habitation, set west of Norwich and close to Kings Lynn. It was prosperous in the Middle Ages as a centre for the wool and sheep industries, but slowed down after the Industrial Revolution centred the wool trade further north. Fine Georgian heritage buildings and an impressively large town square with an 18th century market cross bear witness to its former success. Tourism is important to the town, with Swaffham hotels ranging from boutique to rambling historic pub and even one of the Best Western chain hotels, housed in a Georgian mansion. Close by is the outstanding natural beauty of the Brecks, a wild area of glades, forests and heath set under the vast expanse of the Norfolk skies. For a quiet break, this region of England is perfect.
