Introduction to Sutton Coldfield, England
Sutton Coldfield lies nowadays within the massive industrial and commercial city of Birmingham, although there is evidence of human habitation here since the Bronze Age. Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans all played their part here, and Henry VIII once had hunting grounds where the city now stands. The city's industrial heritage began comparatively early, with the manufacture of blades, bayonets and guns, and wealth was generated even before the Industrial Revolution as a result. In the late 19th century, with the coming of the railway, the city became a popular picnic spot. After WWII, major redevelopment took place, with the city losing most of its heritage sites, leading to its being used as a dormitory town for Birmingham. Several listed rows of cottages are still here, within two small conservation areas. A number of Sutton Coldfield hotels are set up as resorts and spas, and others aim at Birmingham business travellers who prefer to lodge away from the city centre. The city is also a good base for visitors planning on a day's shopping in Birmingham's vast Bull Ring centre.
