Introduction to Sudbury, England
The small market town of Sudbury lies in the eastern county of Suffolk, just 24kms from Colchester and 97kms from London. Originally a Saxon settlement, its earliest mention comes in 799 AD and it was noted as a market town in the 1086 Domesday Book. The little town's claim to fame is its two 18th century artist sons, John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough, painters in oils of the iconic Suffolk countryside, whose works are now worth millions. The town's Gainsborough House Museum is set in the great man's birthplace and his statue stands in the market square. This is a quaint and charming town, popular with visitors who love old streets and a feel of history, with picturesque Sudbury hotels, pubs and guesthouses promising a quiet, pleasant stay. Just across the county border in Essex is Colchester, a fine old town set on the Blackwater River estuary, famous for its heritage buildings and Roman city walls.
