Introduction to Stoke on Trent - City Centre
Names are plentiful for this busy urban junction; officially titled Stoke on Trent, the city also goes by The Potteries and the 'City of Five Towns' - though it actually includes six. Originally individual villages in the 17th century, Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fention and Longton flourished in the ceramics industry (due to the land's abundance in clay), and eventually expanded into a united federation. Stoke on Trent city centre, also called Hanley, offers the most attractions, but those in the adjoining towns are easily reached via public transit. The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery contains a world-class collection of ceramics and beautiful paintings, and the AirSpace Gallery along the street exhibits the work of internationally-known contemporary artists. There are two theatres nearby, Victoria Hall and Mitchell Memorial. Pottery is the merchandise of choice in this city, but additional shopping can be found in the city centre. Be sure to try the famous Staffordshire oatcake, found in many eateries in the city. The city's urban area combines Stoke on Trent with Newcastle-under-Lyme, but a stay in Stoke on Trent City Centre hotels will place visitors in the centre of the action.
