Introduction to Stevenage - City Centre
Stevenage may be the first 'new town' established in England after WWII, but people have lived in this region, 51kms north of central London, since the Roman Empire. The Six Hills ancient Roman burial site and over 2,000 Roman coins have been unearthed in the area in recent years. There may be relatively few Stevenage City Centre hotels, but the ones which exist tend to be far cheaper than their London counterparts. This city, shaped like a heart when seen from the air, boasts an elaborate separated cycling path network as well as the United Kingdom's first pedestrianised shopping precinct. The Stevenage Museum depicts the town's history, both before and after it became a new town, and the Avenue Walk takes visitors past the High Street to the historic St Nicholas Church, the Rooks Nest House, where author EM Forster spent his childhood, and the remains of an ancient church called St Aethelreda. The Boxfield art gallery and the 501-seat Gordon Craig Theatre are part of the local arts and leisure centre, while a bowling alley and a 16-screen cinema are located in the local leisure park.
